“13 WREX pushed me to be the best journalist I could be and it’s the reason I found success as an investigative journalist. There are markets twice the size of Rockford that will not give you the experience, education and mentorship WREX does. I can’t recommend this station enough, whether you’re just starting out your career or you’re a news veteran. If you want to grow and thrive as a journalist, WREX is where you want to be.”

Kristin Crowley, Investigative Reporter,
From 13 WREX to 11Alive – Atlanta

“13 WREX took a chance on me right out of college, and provided the perfect launchpad to my current position as a general assignment and breaking news reporter in Kansas City. Working in a team-first atmosphere, thinking on my feet, and finding new ways to creatively tell a great story were all skills that I sharpened in Rockford as a sports anchor and reporter. I was also able to contribute to our news and weather operations on election and severe weather coverage, and that was instrumental in my transition from sports to news.”

“The biggest thing I learned though is becoming a member of the community and building trust with our audience. That was crucial to turning our sports department into the go-to source for local high school sports coverage. Developing relationships with viewers, and meeting them where they are, is what I’m doing right now, and I know that continues today in the WREX newsroom.”

Dan Cohen, Reporter,
From 13 WREX to KSHB – Kansas City

“13 WREX was my first job out of college and my experience at 13 News was what made me who I am today. Working here helped me learn how to make connections with the community and what it was like to have a true work family.  The different aspects of weather that the Stateline had to offer also gave a young meteorologist the chance to learn how to tackle any kind of weather phenomena. May it be the blizzard of November 2018 when I first started or the massive derecho from August 10, 2020, it really had a way of teaching me what being a meteorologist is all about.  We are here to keep people informed, safe, and protected from anything the weather has to throw at us and I am grateful for the experience and WREX and I know will help me go far in my career.”

Tommie Owens, Weekend Meteorologist,
From 13 WREX to WALB – Albany, Georgia

“Rockford is a great news town. Period. This is the perfect market to start your career in as you will get experience covering a range of stories that will prepare you extremely well for your next market. WREX is made up of a small team of award-winning journalists who play big and have gotten national attention for their work.”

“You will work hard at WREX but this station will allow you to experiment and investigate the stories that need to be told. I moved halfway across the country to a city I had never heard of. I’m definitely glad I did. After a few years I not only landed a job in a top 25 market I was also a stronger journalist. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.”

Reuben Jones, Reporter
From 13 WREX to Spectrum News Charlotte – North Carolina

“I was offered the Morning News Producer position at WREX-TV in November of 2015, exactly one month before graduating from Northern Illinois University. I remember just feeling so grateful to be gifted the opportunity to get my feet through the door… though, I had no idea what I was really getting in to. It was my first job out of school, overnight hours, just two hours away from Chicago, where all of my family and friends were, so, what could go wrong!? I was blessed, but I was also figuring life out.”

“For the majority of my 15 months at WREX, I was the only Black person working in the newsroom and it wasn’t until I had taken my career a step forward, that I realized what I had really been bringing to the table at WREX… not only as a Black, young, motivated woman, but, one with a background very similar to a large percentage of our viewers and their families.”

“By the time I had left WREX, I had true confidence in my ability to produce and that’s one of my proudest takeaways… it’s number two behind our Emmy-award win back in 2016 for an outstanding morning newscast that multiple people on the team worked hard on, to get on air. I am proud of the start and the finish I had at 13WREX and that experience will always be a chapter in my book.”

Ericka Wilson, Producer
From 13 WREX to WHDH-TV – Boston
