Rockford Lutheran clinched its first ever trip to the girls volleyball state series with a two-set victory in the 2-A Super-Sectional.
The Lady Crusaders swept Timothy Christian in Johnsburg, winning 25-22, 25-23. Lutheran fell behind in the second set, 20-13, before ripping off a 12-3 run to put the match away, a recurring theme for the team this week as they fought back from deficits against Rock Falls and Montini to win the 2-A sectional to get to Supers.
“They definitely do not give up,” said Lutheran head coach Jordan Haverly. “You gotta love them for it even though it gives me a heart attack half the time.”
Lutheran will face St. Teresa of Decatur in the 2-A state semifinals at Redbird Arena at Illinois State next Friday, at approximately 1:30pm following the St. Joseph Ogden-Breese Mater Dei state semifinal.
In the Class 1-A Super-Sectional at Freeport High School, Dakota matched up against the defending state champions from Newark. After falling behind in the first set, the Lady Indians rallied, but lost the first frame, 25-23. The Lady Norsemen then won 25-12 in the second to return to the state series.
The Class 3-A Super-Sectional at LaSalle-Peru was a thriller between Belvidere North and Sterling. The defending state champs got all they could handle from the Lady Blue Thunder, but the Lady Golden Warriors won in three, 25-23, 25-15, 28-26.
