The Sectional championship round of the high school volleyball playoffs is in the books, with a few local teams punching tickets to Friday’s Super-Sectional round.
3-A: Belvidere North won the school’s first Sectional volleyball championship, 2-1, over Crystal Lake Central. The Blue Thunder dropped the first set, 25-13, but bounced back in a big way. They won a back and forth 2nd set, 25-23, to set up a deciding final set. It was back and forth for awhile, but North took a 16-13 lead and never looked back, winning 25-21 to set off the celebration in Crystal Lake. Next up, North takes on Sterling in the 3-A LaSalle-Peru Super-Sectional Friday night. Sterling beat L-P to win the Metamora Sectional title.
2-A: Much like Belvidere North, Rockford Lutheran won its first Sectional volleyball championship in comeback fashion. After dropping the first set to Montini, the Lady Crusaders came back strong to take the final two sets, with Lauren Spangler’s spike putting the match away in the final set. The win sends Lutheran to the 2-A Johnsburg Super-Sectional Friday night, where the Lady Crusaders will face Timothy Christian.
1-A: Dakota won a Sectional championship, claiming the 1-A Pecatonica Sectional title with a 2-1 win over Galena. All three sets were decided by two points. Tabytha Toelke provided the spark for her team down the stretch. Dakota trailed, 23-21, late in the final set before storming back for the victory. Dakota will take on Newark Friday night in the 1-A Aquin Super-Sectional, which will be played at Freeport High School.
