KIRKLAND (WREX) — Hiawatha senior running back Kyle Thompson is our new WREX Athlete of the Week. He helped the Hawks soar in the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time since 1987, as the took care of Abingdon-Avon in the first round last week.
“After Saturday, he has 35 touchdowns this season, career he’s over 50 now,” Hiawatha head coach Jason Keneway said. “He shattered that record. He’s going to have that forever.”
Thompson put in a lot of work this offseason, and the benefits are showing up as Hiawatha continues its best season in school history.
“I’m not surprised,” Thompson said of breaking records. “The cattle, the linemen, work really hard. They do a lot for me. They help me find the holes and score.”
Hiawatha’s road to playoff success has been a worthwhile journey for coach Keneway, a Hiawatha grad, and this year’s senior class.
“Kyle and this group, these seniors, they’re my first group of freshman,” Keneway, in his 4th year as head coach, said. “They’ve grown as I’ve grown too. It’s cool to see Kyle have the success he has now as we’ve grown as a program. I’ve grown as a coach. Kyle has put in a ton of work in the offseason to bulk up a bit. He’s getting the rewards of that now.”
This year’s group of Hawks has cemented its place in school history. Now Thompson and his teammates hope to write another winning chapter this weekend in round two.
Hiawatha hits the road to Morrison for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
