ROCKFORD (WREX) — A Rockford sewing ministry is celebrating a milestone for one of their founding quilters.

The Quilting and Sewing Ministry of Central Christian Church celebrated a member milestone Saturday Morning. Ellen Peterson has completed 100 quilts for veterans in nursing homes.

The ministry utilizes member’s sewing and quilting talents to aid many organizations across the world by providing handmade items. It has provided for organizations such as Vietnow, Motherhouse, Remedies, Rock House, Rockford Rescue Mission, Walter Lawson, and more spanning as far as Africa.

Ellen has been with the ministry since it began back in 2010. The group has since created over 200 quilts, nearly half being those sewn by Peterson.

Ellen says the quilts are her way of serving those who have served and sacrificed for all of us.

“I think of it as a service to service men because of what they’ve done for us, for me,” says Peterson. “It’s just a good feeling to be able to repay them in some way.”

She added that her motivation comes from her sheer love for the sewing hobby.
