ROCKFORD(WREX)— Shelters in Rockford are hitting their capacity, as more and more people are using their facilities.
“We are fairly full. Through out the summer, fuller than we have been in past summers,” Casey Bachochin from Remedies Renewing Lives.
According to the shelter, the increase of people is actually a good sign.
To them, it means more people are their leaving domestic violent situations and are choosing to make a change in their life.
“People are hearing more about us, they are being connected with us quicker than they used to be in the past, and now they are knowing there is a shelter space for them to come to,” said Bachochin
But remedies renewing lives isn’t the only place seeing an increase.
The Rockford Rescue Mission is also seeing a jump, with 17% more people using the shelter.
“Three reasons we are seeing in the Rockford area is eviction, addiction and domestic violence relationship conflicts. And we have been seeing a big increase in people using our shelter,” said Crystal Savage from the Rockford Rescue Mission.
“We have seen an increase here and it kinda tells me more is going on out on the streets and more people are seeking services which is a good thing,” said Mike Hedrick with the Rockford Rescue Mission.
With so many people using the facilities, organizers say they also want to see more affordable housing.
“What we need is more housing, more affordable housing and that is what I think is the longest part of the puzzle, or this piece needed for people is that the housing just isn’t there,” said Bachochin
Both shelters want to remind people that even with the rising numbers, they will not turn anyone away.
