ROCKFORD (WREX) — One man is working to beat the odds and find himself a high paying job by using a new program offered by the Rockford Rescue Mission.

His name is Cory Carter and he has worked for months to get where he is now.

“I passed my GED test on Friday morning,” said Life Recovery resident Cory Carter. The Rockford Rescue Mission helped make that happen. It added another program to its Works! Center where people can study with tutors and take their GED test on site.

“So it’s just really awesome to be able to offer that to the community,” said Rockford Rescue Mission Director of Development Crystal Savage.

The program is something Carter says will open doors for him in the future.

“Oh, it’s wonderful. I’m able to apply for different jobs here in Rockford and possibly go to Rock Valley College here soon,” said Carter.

Carter says he struggled with addition throughout his life which lead him into poverty. But now that he has worked for higher education, he is hoping to change the course of his future.

“It’s a relief knowing that when I go in and apply for jobs here in the Rockford area, I am more qualified for them,” said Carter.

The GED Testing Center is something Rockford Rescue Mission hopes will reduce Rockford’s high poverty level.

“But we don’t want it to be that revolving door. We want to see people really get into stable, sustainable housing and that really comes through the education and many multiple layers,” said Savage.

The Rockford Rescue Mission is working to provide hope for those struggling in our community by providing a brighter future.

“Helping that individual just become whole and just productive and just successful on how they want to live their life,” said Savage.
