BYRON (WREX) — Nearly 3 years to the day a mother and her young son were murdered in Byron, authorities announce charges in their deaths and say a suspect is in custody.
Maggie Rosko’s ex-husband, Duane Meyer, is charged in her death and the death of their 3-year-old son Amos.
The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office along with other authorities announced the news Wednesday afternoon during a news conference.
Maggie Rosko and her 3-year-old Amos were killed after a fire at their home in Byron on Oct. 19, 2016. The fire was reported by Maggie’s ex-husband, Duane Meyer, who told investigators he was there to pick up his son. Amos was found in the front yard by first responders and rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities say Maggie was found dead inside the home. The State Fire Marshall determined the fire to be arson, and investigators opened homicide cases.
A grand jury returned the indictment against Meyer on Tuesday. He was arrested Wednesday morning on multiple charges. He faces four counts of first degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson, and one count concealment of a homicidal death. During his arrest, he was in possession of a loaded gun and additionally charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
Illinois State Police, the Ogle County Coroner’s Office, the State’s Attorney’s Office, Byron Fire Protection District, Byron Police Department were at Wednesday’s news conference.
