ROCKFORD (WREX) — Guilford senior goalkeeper Johnny Sarmiento is our new WREX Athlete of the Week. Sarmiento helped the Vikings win a pair of penalty kick shootouts last week to boost the team into sole possession of 1st place in the NIC-10 soccer standings.
“That was the best week I’ve had in my life,” Sarmiento said.
Guilford came into last week tied with East and Boylan with undefeated NIC-10 records, but the Vikings left the week all alone in 1st place thanks in part to Sarmiento’s shootout efforts.
“It’s kind of technique, but it’s also a 50-50 chance,” Sarmiento said of stopping a shootout attempt. “You either go left or right.”
He guessed right and was able to keep enough shots out to lift his team to victory. He even took a PK of his own and scored in the win against Boylan.
“In summer training I would practice everyday,” he said of switching to the offensive role in a shootout.
The week was even more emotional for Johnny, as a couple of his brothers were able to see him play. But one part of the family was missing.
“I had a brother that passed away,” Sarmiento said. “Both my brothers came to watch me play on my senior night. I just thought I wish he could be there to watch me win.”
Johnny carries the memory of his brother Saul, as he tries to finish his high school career in a big way.
