ROCKFORD (WREX) – Keeping students in Illinois for college. That’s what one event looked to achieve with local students on Tuesday.

The second annual Salute to Illinois Scholars was held at Giovanni’s Convention Center. Held by multiple public universities in the state, the event aims to fight Illinois students going to colleges in other states. Students got to meet with representatives from the universities, where they got their questions answered.

“We know that there are other options in other states and other parts of the country,” said Tim Killeen, who is the President of the University of Illinois System. “But we want to make sure that everybody here, growing up here, going through high school here and college-ready really fully appreciates the opportunities that we can bring to the table.”

According to Killeen, about 470 people attended the event.
