MACHESNEY PARK (WREX) — An employee at the Machesney Park Goodwill store returned a stack of money worth $5,200 that was mistakenly donated.
A wares processor was was sorting and processing donated goods when she found the money in a donated sack. Realizing it was most likely donated in error, the employee got to work to return the cash.
A store manager was able to use outside camera footage and trace the donor down by looking at the car’s license plate number. They contacted the person who made the donation.
Goodwill says the donor, while cleaning out an apartment, had not been aware of the stashed cash and was grateful it was returned.
“This goes to the honesty and integrity of our Goodwill employees,” said Ben Bernsten, the president of Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois. “We are extremely proud of these individuals and very happy to see that this substantial amount of money was returned to the rightful owner.”
