ROCKFORD (WREX) — There are huge changes and expansions happening at the Chicago Rockford International Airport.
“This is fastest growing cargo airport on the planet,” said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara.
Recently, the airport was named the fastest growing cargo airport in the world by the Airports Council International.
RFD is tripling the size of a building for Amazon cargo and adding more than 800 employees.
The UPS facility at the airport has also gotten bigger, with more than 30 flights coming in and out of the region daily
“It’s really an amazing story, and mike said this, to see what the Rockford area is doing and how it is growing,” said Congressman Adam Kinzinger
The airport’s success has people like the governor saying Rockford is becoming an influential city.
“This is a great place to do business. Rockford is a terrific place to do business and we ought to be attracting business from all over the county to Rockford,” said Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker
But how does Rockford continue it’s success? Well, the governor says it’s all about expanding on more jobs with an eye on the future
“Apprenticeship tax credit so that businesses will grow jobs and bring in young people and train them for those jobs,”said Pritzker
Airport officials say they are ready to take it to the next level.
“It’s gonna be working with our users, the UPS, the Amazon, the charter companies we have been working with to get even more operations here in Rockford as well as growing our infrastructure to handle more operations going forward,” said RFD Deputy Director of Operations and Planning Zack Oakley.
RFD has been an air hub for Amazon for the three years. It also has been an air hub for UPS for the last 25 years.
