ROCKFORD (WREX) — Belvidere and Rockford school officials along with local police are investigating a possible gang threat targeting Friday’s football game between Belvidere and Auburn High Schools at Auburn.
Belvidere High School posted on its Facebook page late Wednesday night announcing it had sent a letter home to parents.
That letter says the district is aware, adding that the school resource officer and administration are in contact with officials at Auburn and the Rockford Police Department.
“Auburn has shared updates on their investigation as well as security measures they intend to take to ensure a safe event for all. As is normal practice for away football games, Belvidere High School administration will be present for this Friday’s contest,” the post reads.
The district says it will update Belvidere High School students and families on Thursday.
It is unclear what type of threat was made, or how it was made. But, the post says, “Please take a moment and remind your children that making any threat on a public school, business or other establishment is never a joke. I urge you to talk to your children now and impress upon them the seriousness of threats in today’s society.”
The post says the district takes threats very seriously and encourages students to come forward if they hear of a threat.
