BELVIDERE (WREX) — Belvidere North got its toughest test of the NIC-10 season, but held off hard-charging Hononegah, 2-0, to take over sole possession of first place in the conference.

The Lady Thunder and Lady Indians both came into the night unbeaten in conference play, so North now has the inside track in the race to a NIC-10 title.

This one did not come easy. Hononegah jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the first set, but the Blue Thunder stormed back to tie it at 19. The two teams traded blows for the next few points, and needed a couple of extra points to decide the first set, with an Ava Irvin ace clinching it for Belvidere North, 27-25. The second set was also tightly contested, with Belvidere North winning it 25-23.

Belvidere North hosts a big tournament this Saturday.
