Rockford Lutheran students partake in flag changing ceremony ahead of International Peace Day

ROCKFORD (WREX) — As Rockford Lutheran prepares to welcome of hundreds of guests, students partook in a special ceremony Wednesday morning.

A group of students took part in a flag changing ceremony at the Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza.

Students lowered, replaced, and raised flags at the plaza as part of a week long celebration leading up to the International Day of Peace.

Students say the experience was eye-opening.

“Today I learned that everyone is equal,” says Joey Soper, a student at Rockford Lutheran High School. “I’ve heard different stories of how some countries are higher and how everyone treats other countries differently. But in reality, we’re all equal, we’re all together and we’re all one.”

Soper continued saying: “I feel like it definitely opens up my eyes how the world is and how we all are at one and we’re all peaceful with each other and that no one is above each other. We’re all equal. And some might say America is higher, but our flag is right there, just equal with everyone else.”
