DURAND (WREX) — Durand volleyball player Abby Erickson is our WREX Athlete of the Week after coming back strong from a bad injury to play her senior year.
Erickson tore her ACL, MCL and meniscus in Durand’s Sectional final appearance against Newark last year. She learned a lot about herself through the rehab process, but also learned about her community.
“I didn’t realize how much support I had,” Erickson said through tears. “I didn’t realize my whole town was behind me.”
Lifted by an entire community, Erickson began her road to recovery, with a special boost from her physical therapist.
“She saw what I didn’t see,” Erickson said. “She saw that I was going to make it back and make a comeback even though I couldn’t at the beginning.”
Less than a year after blowing out her knee, she’s back on the court for the Lady Bulldogs and hoping to lead them to another big season.
“She’s put so much heart into her recovery that she deserves everything she’s got going for her,” Durand head coach Molly Kelsey, also Abby’s cousin, said.
Abby’s fear that she’d never play again has morphed into a fearless drive back to the sport she loves, backed by a town that considers everyone family.
“I can promise you that I would not be the same person without Durand,” Erickson said. “Durand is the town that built me. It’s the town that I realized I had all these people behind me.”
Abby Erickson stands stronger than ever, representing Durand proudly on her uniform.
