Officials: Chicago Public Schools’ handling of sexual abuse complaints is “tragic and inexcusable”

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal investigation has found Chicago Public Schools’ handling of sexual abuse complaints is “tragic and inexcusable” and is requiring a major overhaul.

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights on Thursday called its investigation the most comprehensive of any major urban school district. It was sparked by student complaints dating back several years.

Federal officials say the district must have a second independent review of complaints and review the actions of current and former employees, among other things.

The district agreed to the changes, acknowledging in a statement that students didn’t get “the comprehensive support they deserved.” It also outlined steps it’s already taken, including forming a new office.
