Belvidere man found guilty on 12 counts of child pornography

BELVIDERE (WREX) — A Belvidere man faces up to 180 years in prison after being found guilty on 12 counts of dissemination of child pornography.

Joseph Thompson, 55, of Belvidere, was found guilty 12 counts of dissemination of child pornography on Wednesday by a Boone County jury.

According to the Boone County State’s Attorney’s Office, in April 2017, Belvidere Police received information that a person in Belvidere was believed to be disseminating child pornography through an AOL email. A search warrant showed the email account in question was registered to Thompson.

The records also contained the emails that were sent, along with the attachments of the child pornographic photos.

A search warrant was later executed on Thompson’s house, and his computer was found to contain all of the photos that were attached to the emails. Thompson admitted to sending the photos to others using his AOL email account, according to the State’s Attorney’s office.

Thompson faces a minimum of 48 years in prison, with a maximum sentence of 180 years. Thompson will also have to register as a sex offender when he is released.

A sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 30.
