The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the individuals have been identified and contacted by officers, but their names are not being released at this time.
Authorities began investigating after a member of the park’s staff received a photo that showed two people had carved something into a sandstone at the park.

The Town of Utica posted on their Facebook saying a police sergeant believes the couple burned a stick and caused minimal damage. The sergeant believes the couple will either be fined or warned.
IDNR officials say during the course of that investigation, another picture surfaced showing more vandalism. This photo shows extensive damage done by two people engraving the rock.
IDNR says both investigations are active and ongoing, but don’t appear to be connected.
