New Irish restaurant, pub opens in Midtown

ROCKFORD (WREX) — A new Rockford restaurant has opened up in Midtown and it’s all thanks to a program offered by the City of Rockford.

Gene’s Irish Pub opened up their new location at 1025 5th Ave. on Tuesday.

The pub went through the city’s Business First Program, which helps people in redeveloping an existing property or open a new business at an already existing property.

The pub used to be located on Manchester Drive before it closed, but parts of the old pub will be coming to the new business.

“Some of the items from our old menu are coming back,” says Gene Hayenga, the owner of Gene’s Irish Pub. “The old ones everybody liked. We’re also doing an Irish theme with bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie and beef stew.”

The pub is open Tuesday through Saturday.
