CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — A three-year-old girl is reported in critical condition after being shot as she rode in a vehicle traveling along a suburban Chicago street.
Chicago Heights Police Chief Thomas Rogers said in a statement that officers responding to calls of shots fired early Tuesday learned a toddler was taken by her mother to a nearby hospital.
Rogers says investigating officers learned the girl suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The child, who wasn’t identified, was later airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The child’s mother told investigators she heard what sounded like a tire pop, and then heard the girl crying in the rear passenger seat with blood coming from her head.
Rogers says it’s unclear who was being targeted in the shooting, which is being investigated by Chicago Heights police and Illinois State Police.
