DEKALB — A fourth quarter interception return for a touchdown by Jalen McKie sealed a season-opening victory for the Northern Illinois University football team and garnered Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week honors for week one the league announced Monday.
In addition to the pick six, the sophomore defensive back made four tackles in a 24-10 win over Illinois State. McKie iced the win when he intercepted Illinois State’s Brady Davis at the 32-yard line and ran it back for a touchdown with 2:31 to play for the 24-10 final score. McKie’s interception return for a touchdown was the second of his career. He added four tackles, two solo, and had a tackle for loss in addition to his interception.
This is McKie’s second career player of the week honor. His first came last season after a two interception, PAT return for a score performance at Akron last year.
The Huskies (1-0) return to action Saturday, Sept. 7 when NIU travels to Utah to face the Utes. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
