New Illinois law bans smoking in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 18

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WREX) — Gov. Pritzker signs a bill that prohibits smoking in a vehicle with anyone under the age of 18.

Gov. Pritzker signed House Bill 2276 last week.

According to House Bill 2276, it will be illegal to inhale, exhale, burn or carry a lighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, weed, plant, regulated narcotic or other combustible substance in a motor vehicle containing a person under 18.

The bill also prohibits smoking regardless of whether the vehicle is in motion, at rest or has its windows down.

Violators of the new law will be punished with a fine upwards of $100. A second offense is punishable by $250.

According to the Governor’s office, the law goes into effect immediately.
