BELVIDERE (WREX)- Belvidere Police are on scene of a bank robbery and suspicious package at the First National Bank on the corner of South State Street and U.S. 20.

Police Chief Shane Woody says they received a call around 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon for a robbery at the bank in the 1700 block of South State Street.

Once on scene, police say they received a tip there was a suspicious package inside the bank.

Officers evacuated those inside the bank, parking lot and the immediate area and set up a perimeter.

Chief Woody says the immediate area around the bank is closed, including South State Street between 9th Street and U.S. 20.

The SwedishAmerican location near the bank is still seeing patients on a limited basis, according to Chief Woody.

Money was taken from the bank but it is unclear if the suspect was armed. Police continue to interview witnesses and bank employees.

The FBI and the Rockford Bomb Squad are helping with the investigation. Chief Woody says the area will be blocked off for the next couple of hours.

Chief Woody added that there is no indication this robbery was linked to the threat made to Belvidere North Thursday morning.
