DIXON (WREX) — Dixon’s football team has become a playoff regular over the past few years under head coach Dave Smith. Ever since the Dukes joined the Big Northern Conference, they’ve been a factor to make a postseason run.
Dixon has made the playoffs in five straight seasons, and they hope this year keeps the streak alive.
“We’re definitely going for the playoffs again,” senior wide receiver Nate Long said. “This year we’re trying to get conference for sure. It’s looking pretty good. A lot of hard work in the summer.”
Coach Smith knows the seniors have helped build this program into conference contenders every year. They’ll look to maintain that level of success.
“We’re working on developing the culture of our program,” Smith said. “It’s not about one year. It’s about the program. These guys know what’s expected of them. When you work hard you have higher expectations. The work ethic is there so our expectations are higher.”
Dixon has continued to find a way to reload even after losing several players with big production in recent years.
“A lot of new people [are] stepping up,” Long said. “The younger class [is] stepping up. A lot of new people in different positions. Everything is changing.”
The Dukes hope the one thing that doesn’t change is the streak of going to the playoffs. They get their season started in week one against Stillman Valley.
