JANESVILLE (WREX) — A man found an artillery shell and drove it to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office which was promptly evacuated Friday afternoon.
A man cleaning his mother’s attic in Janesville found an artillery shell, put it in his vehicle and drove to the Rock County Sheriff’s Department offices on Humes Road, according to a press release.
The man arrived just before 1:30 p.m. Deputies immediately blocked off the parking lot and evacuated people from the area.Rockford Bomb Squad was called and it took the explosive.
The Sheriff’s Office stressed there was no danger to the public.
The Rockford Police Department Bomb Squad responded to Janesville to handle the device. Officers will dispose of the ordnance at a later day, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“The Rock County Sheriff’s Office would like to caution citizens about handling these types of devices or any other artillery,” the press release said. “The best and safest practice is to quarantine the area, safely evacuate and call 911 as soon as possible.”
