Settlement reached in lawsuit between Winnebago County Sheriff’s, County Board

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — The Winnebago County Sheriff’s lawsuit against the county board has officially come to an end.

The board came to an agreement  to settle the lawsuit back in July.

The agreement requires the County Board to approve a budget amendment of $1.7 million for the Sheriff’s Department’s 2019 budget. The money will be used to pay the salaries for 24 Deputies.

As part of the settlement, Caruana must pay for all attorney fees for Terry Ekl, who served as special prosecutor on behalf of the sheriff in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed in March against the Winnebago County Board, Chairman Frank Haney and the County. The lawsuit alleged that the budget the county board passed for 2019 was illegal.
