FORRESTON (WREX) — Forreston won the 1-A state championship last year, and the Cardinals are hungry for more. They’ve won titles in 2014, ’16 and ’18, and now want to defend their title and win a championship in an odd year.
“We have 15 current seniors that were here last year,” head coach Kyle Zick said. “Having those guys, having that experience especially playing as deep as they were able to in the playoffs, it’ll be an advantage for us.”
Last year’s team hit its stride in the 2nd half of the season, winning ten straight games on the way to the championship after starting the year 2-2. They were able to find a consistent lineup that worked up front and set the tone for everything else.
“I don’t think we had the same line until week six where we actually repeated the offensive line,” Zick said. “So everyday is a competition.”
Forreston’s talented group of running backs relies on that line to clear the way for them.
“The big guys do a lot of the moving and stick to the rules,” running back Dom Christensen said. “They don’t go outside of the rules. They don’t try to be a hero or anything. They just stick to the rules.”
Forreston has ruled the state in even-numbered years lately. Now, with a target on their backs, the Cardinals will try to defend that title while going through an always-tough NUIC conference schedule.
Forreston opens the season against Dakota.
