ROCKFORD (WREX) – A number of kids flocked to the Rockford Police Department for a backpack giveaway on Wednesday.

Students between kindergarten and 6th grade got a free book bag. And that wasn’t all. The bags were already packed with supplies like notebooks, folders and pencils. Rockford Police say the event gives them a chance to make a small difference today that could make a big difference in the future.

“They’re in fact the ones that are going to change the crime perception over the next two generations, so we have to start small and work big,” said Ofc. Matthew Williams of the Rockford Police Department.

Rockford Police gave away more than 300 backpacks.
