ROCKFORD (WREX) — Mercyhealth in Rockford now boasts a new certification and it’s the most prestigious in the country when it comes to stroke healthcare.
Mercyhealth is now certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The certification is based on standards set by the American Stroke Association and the Brain Attack Coalition.
The certification means Mercyhealth addresses the full spectrum of stroke care: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education.
According to the American Stroke Association, an American has a stroke every 40 seconds in the U.S. and it’s the leading cause of disability in adults.
“People don’t have to suffer the disability from strokes any longer,” Mercyhealth President & CEO Javon Bea said. “That’s a major advancement for the Rockford area.”
Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville and Javon Bea Hospital–Rockton in Rockford recently received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. It recognizes both hospitals’ commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment.
Rockton also received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award and Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center received the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite award.
“It is an honor to be part of a team and program that provides the highest level of care for stroke patients,” said Dr. Shawn Wallery, Mercyhealth Medical Director, Neurovascular and Stroke. “As a physician, my number one goal is assuring patients are treated with the most advanced research proven methods.”
In March 2018, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center received the same certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.
