BELVIDERE (WREX) — Belvidere North has made the playoffs in five of the past six seasons, and with a strong senior class returning, the expectation is to reach that mark once again.
“I am really happy about our senior class,” head coach Jeff Beck said. “I’ve been looking forward to coaching these guys. That’s not a knock toward any other class. I’ve just gotten a chance to know these kids the past three years. The way they communicate with each other, the way they pick up their teammates when they’re down. I just looked at this group coming through and they’re a very solid group.”
Holden Paddock returns as the Blue Thunder quarterback this year. He had a strong season last year and looks to help his team accomplish its goals in 2019.
“The mental makeup and the attitude of this group is we’re hard workers,” Paddock said. “We’re always disciplined. We just listen to the coaches and work hard everyday.”
This group may not be the biggest or fastest team in the NIC-10, but they know how to run their triple option offense, and when they’re on their game, they can be tough to slow down.
Wednesday marked the first day teams could put on shoulder pads, which is helping things seem a little more real with the season just 16 days away.
“Everything is getting more intense,” senior wide receiver and defensive end Matt Bucher said. “We’re obviously hitting harder now that we have the pads on. It’s a lot of fun. I can’t wait to get out there for week one.”
There should be a lot of heavy hitting in week one, as Belvidere North takes on East, another team that prides itself on running the football and playing strong defense.
