Illinois lawmaker wants to bring back the death penalty

BARRINGTON HILLS (WREX) — An Illinois Republican says he wants to bring the death penalty back to Illinois.

Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) says he will either sponsor or co-sponsor some version of a bill to bring back the death penalty.

McSweeney told 13 WREX he believes the DNA technology now is advanced enough ensure there aren’t any wrongful convictions.

Earlier this year, Deputy Jacob Keltner was shot and killed while serving a warrant in Rockford. The suspect, Floyd Brown, was arrested on federal charges and could face the death penalty since it’s a federal case.

McSweeney admits it will be tough to pass the bill, but will still try to do so during the next session.
