Health officials use grant to lower obesity and heart disease rate in Stephenson and Carroll County

STEPHENSON COUNTY (WREX)–health officials with the Stephenson county and the university of Illinois Chicago Rockford campus are working together to fight obesity and heart disease.

They are doing it by using the Win With Wellness grant program.

The program includes activities and resources for people to use to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Right now, over 60% of people in both Stephenson and Carroll county are considered either over weight or obese.

The win with wellness program is hitting its second cycle, after successfully helping more than 80 people lower their body weight and risk for various diseases.

Health officials say their biggest goal is helping people get to the lifestyle they’ve always wanted to live.

“As researchers, we don’t go into communities and tell people what they need. We go ask them what they want and then work with that to achieve the goals we need to achieve,” said UIC Research Assistant Professor Manorama Khare.
