ROCKFORD(WREX) — Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed a new law that will increase the license fees video gaming machines in Rockford.

The fee will go up from $25 to $250.

City officials say is a small price business owners will pay that will help the city long term.

“Under the current $25 fee on the machines, we generate about $11,000 a year. With the new proposed law, we will get about $114,000 a year,” said Finance Director Carrie Hagerty.

City officials say the extra revenue is needed as the city continues to crunch numbers to close the gap on a city-wide deficit.

Despite paying more money, business owners like Jay Gesner say they’ve supported the bill since it’s creation.

“Can’t fight it too much because we agreed on this and we actually went down and talk to legislators and helped it to get through,” said Jay Gesner.

“Its refreshing to have business group that comes to the table and says that they want to be apart of the solution,” said Carrie Hagerty.

The bill takes into effect January 1st, 2020.
