FREEPORT (WREX) – While most high school seniors are talking about ACT scores and college visists, one Freeport native is preparing for something much different.

Ava Peterson is getting ready to attend the Interlochen Arts Academey in Michigan. The school only admits around 500 people and brings in artists from 40 countries across the globe. While the journey hasn’t always been easy, Peterson says playing the harp has been an obsession since the moment she picked it up.

“For me, I couldn’t put it down,” says Peterson. “So I flew through my lessons, then I started taking professional lessons in Palatine and just loved practicing.”

Peterson says she hopes the experience will help her achieve her dream of playing in a professional orchestra.
