Rockford Fire responds to fire at Fairgrounds Housing Complex

ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Rockford Fire Department responded to an apartment structure fire late Friday night.

The department says it arrived at the Fairgrounds Housing Complex at 331 Underwood Street in Rockford at 9:43 p.m.

Fire fighters say they saw smoke coming from a second story window of the four unit apartment building. The apartment appeared unoccupied and partially furnished. They were able to fully extinguish the flames.

The department says the damage was contained to the bedroom with smoke and heat damage to the surrounding areas. Remaining apartments in the complex were unaffected and there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the affected unit is uninhabitable, however investigators say they believe the fire was intentionally set and are looking into this as an arson case.

Damage is estimated at $20,000.
