ROCKFORD (WREX) — A program affiliated with the Chicago Blackhawks skated into the stateline to help people with developmental disabilities get into the game of hockey.

The Chicago Blackhawks Special Hockey program held a preview event at Carlson Ice Arena in Loves Park.

The team is dedicated to providing children and adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to play hockey.

This year will be the program’s first in the Rockford area.

“This is hockey and they get the locker room experience. They get the teammate experience and the hockey community is so warm and welcoming to our players,” Chicago Blackhawks Special Hockey Director Melanie Freeman said.

The program starts in September at Carlson Ice Arena.
