Bat tests positive for rabies in Boone County

BOONE COUNTY (WREX) — The Boone County Health Department is warning people to not come in contact with bats due to concerns of rabies.

The health department says a bat was recently identified as rabies-positive in Boone County.

Bats are the primary care of rabies in Illinois, according to the health department.

“With identification of a rabid bat in Boone County, we are urging residents to call Animal Control at 815-547-7774 if a bat is found inside the home,” said Amanda Mehl, Public Health Administrator at the Boone County Health Department.

The health department says if a bat is in your home, don’t try to catch it, but rather call animal control or the health department.

To help prevent bats from coming into your home, the health department reminds homeowners to seal cracks, chimney holes or other areas that bats can get in.

Pets should also have their rabies vaccinations up to date.
