ROCKFORD (WREX) – Flowers have lately been appearing in a part of Rockford, Now, the city is deciding which ones are the most beautiful.

City staff judged flowers for the Veterans Memorial Circle contest on Tuesday. Hundreds of volunteers planted thousands of flowers at Veterans Memorial Circle at the roundabout on North Main and Auburn streets. People also adopted 25 sidewalk flowerbeds to beautify the part of Auburn Street between the roundabout and the Rock River.

“This actually is kind of one of my favorite parts of the project because when we were planning this massive amount of space by the Veterans Memorial, we said, ‘well we’re going to take this on too,” said Ernie Redfern, the Co-Chair of the Friends of Veterans Memorial Circle Project.

The winner of the competition was a bed located on the south side of Auburn between the Myott Avenue and Logan Street intersections. They were adopted by Renie Gile and Toni Logli. John Gile helped with watering and weeding.
