Departments across the Stateline host National Night Out

(WREX)- Rockford Police and other community members came together at the City Market Pavilion for a fun night out.

Tuesday was the National Night Out for police and fire departments. The nationwide event is a way for departments to meet their communities and interact with them.

Rockford’s event featured vendors, a backpack give away and police vehicles on display.

National Night Out aims to bring fun, fellowship and food to the community.

“Them being here and forming relationships and connecting people to those resources is a great opportunity,” said Rockford Police Officer Kaera Watson. “Also building relationships with your neighborhood police officers, your neighborhood firefighters and all of the other entities, it’s all about community engagement.”

In Beloit, officers raced kids in running races. Officers also showed off their vehicles and equipment.

Polo Police gave away temporary tattoos and had a face painting station.

Byron firefighters and the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department had games and food for families.
