ROCKFORD (WREX) – Three Rockford men, convicted of a murder they didn’t commit, win their appeal to sue the city.

Tyjuan Anderson, Lumont Johnson and Anthony Ross served more than a decade in prison for the murder of 8-year-old Demarcus Hanson.

The three were convicted in 2002 Years later they were acquitted in a retrial. Court documents say a detective on the case admitted to serious misconduct during the investigation. It also cited other missteps in the case.

The men filed a lawsuit against the city in 2015 and lost but they appealed and just over a week ago won that appeal. That clears the way for them to sue the city for damages.

The city says it can request a rehearing and is considering its options but would not comment further.
