New Interim Chief takes over Freeport Police

FREEPORT (WREX)- The City of Freeport has a new interim Police Chief.

Chief Bill Fiethen will lead the Freeport Police Department while a new chief is picked.

Chief Fiethen was the chief in DeKalb and Monmouth before he retired in 2017.

He was picked from a program that hires retired chiefs to fill in during a change in leadership

Chief Todd Barkalow officially retired from the department on Friday.

Barkalow joined the department in 1993 and became chief in 2014. During his time as chief, he established the city’s Special Victims Unit and the city’s first gang unit.
