ROCKFORD (WREX) — Students at Rockford University now have a new bachelors degree to pursue.
Rockford University added Criminal Justice as a new major. The degree looks to give students opportunities internships at local police departments or organizations.
According to the university, it’s the only four-year residential university in the area to offer a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations with local law enforcement agencies, some different constituents in the community, seeing what can we do as a university to better meet the needs of Rockford,” Rockford University Senior Admission Counselor Tyler Ratts said. “And one conversation that continued to happen was criminal justice.”
The Rockford Police Department says it’s an opportunity to keep local talent in the community.
“I think our goal is to really keep students, keep young people here in Rockford,” Asst. Dep. Chief Mike Dalke said.
Rockford University will begin offering the major this fall.
