ROCKFORD (WREX) — City and state officials are hosting a meeting for people to learn about business opportunities in the cannabis industry on Thursday.

“this is a time for you to get all of your ducks in a row, so to speak, the facts that you need so that you can make an informed decision if this is an industry you want to partake in,” said Representative Maurice West of the 67th District.

The meeting will include information About different opportunities like processes, transporters, and dispensaries

“the process is a lot slower than what people may think. And it is just going to help get the information they need so they can know how they can and can’t move with this new law,” said City of Rockford Economic Development and Diversity Procurement Coordinator Matthew Simpson.

But if you are planning to build a dispensary, you may want to put that on hold.

The new law only accounts for a certain number of dispensaries.
In the Rockford, there can only be three.

“One hundred and ten through out the state. We already have 75 medical marijuana dispensaries. which leaves about 35 left, and they we circulate that through out the whole state. And based on our population, we get 3,” said Representative West.

Even though some opportunities may be more limited than others, officials want people to be encouraged to look into other avenues in the industry

“People are very very interested in this dispensary piece. But there is a lot more to the marijuana business than just being a dispenser,” said Simpson.

City and state officials add that if the city of Rockford decides to ban marijuana completely, people will have to follow that rule.

So far, the city has not created an ordinance.

The meeting is at Veterans Memorial Hall at 5:30 p.m.
