ROCKFORD (WREX) – A group of students got to spend the day with the Rockford Fire Department.
The day retreat was part of a partnership between the department and Rockford Public Schools. The event offered children the opportunity to learn about firefighting and EMS careers. From simulations to interactive participation, the day taught kids basic emergency response skills and first aid.
“Another thing is that this is community education,” said Michael Schnaper, who is an Arson Investigator with the Rockford Fire Department. “So the more everyone is aware of what we do as a fire department, the better informed they’re going to both be safe and support the fire department when they have the opportunity to do so.”
The retreat also taught skills like team-building and leadership.
