ROCKFORD – The Illinois State Junior Girls Championship is up for grabs at Aldeen Golf Club this week, as more than 70 of the top young golfers in the state compete for the title in the two-day tournament. Boylan incoming freshman Ella Greenberg finished with the best score of any area player, shooting a 74, leaving her 4 shots off the lead heading into Wednesday’s final round. Sherrard native Shannyn Vogler leads after shooting a 1st round 70, the only golfer to shoot under par in the 1st round.
Other golfers from the area had solid 1st rounds. Freeport grad Maxine Nesemeier shot a 77, good for 11th overall heading into the final round as she plays in her final tournament before going off to play at Maryville in St. Louis.
Guilford’s Katelyn Sayyalinh is tied for 15th after shooting a 79. DeKalb grad Emma Carpenter also shot a 79 as she gets ready to play in college at Minnesota. Bella Grace Pettersen shot an 80, good for a spot in the top 20 heading into the final round. Rockford Lutheran’s Brooke Bunjes finished with an 84. Rochelle’s Megan Thiravong and Guilford incoming freshman Kayla Sayyalinh both shot 85. Eva Greenberg, Ella’s younger sister, finished with a 90. Eva is the youngest golfer competing in the tournament at 13 years old.
The final round tees off at 8 a.m. Wednesday, with the leaders scheduled to tee off at 9:39 a.m.
