ROCKFORD (WREX)- The Boys and Girls Club of Rockford has a new location on the city’s west side, and it only needs a few tweaks to start serving children.

The club announced it purchased St. Paul Lutheran School on Kilburn Avenue and will open a new club.

Club leaders say the new location will serve people living in the Fairgrounds Valley Housing Complex and the surrounding neighborhood. The club says it got the new location after its Fairgrounds unit grew and the space used could not handle everyone that wanted to participate.

The club doesn’t have to do much to get the former school up and running.

“The great thing about this building, it’s really a turn-key operation,” says Clifford Stoner, Boys & Girls Club of Rockford President and CEO. “By September third, we’ll be serving kids. We don’t have to build a place. It is ready to go and handle kids tomorrow.”

The new location will open its doors on September 3 and will be open Monday through Friday until 9 p.m. and on Saturday during the winter. It will help roughly 400 kids in the surrounding area.
