New Illinois law aims to fight wrongful tree cutting

ROCKFORD (WREX) – A new law in Illinois is aiming to fight wrongful tree cutting.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill last week to amend the Wrongful Tree Cutting Act. The bill would increase penalties as well as provide compensation for damage and remediation costs due to illegal logging on protected land. Sen. Steve Stadelman of Rockford was one of the sponsors of the bill.

“Trees also have more value than just their timber value,” said Kerry Leigh, who is the Executive Director of the Natural Land Institute. “Trees also have value in their functionality.”

The bill went into effect on July 19.
