‘Minding the Gap’ nominated for Emmy

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Minding the Gap, a documentary shot in Rockford, is nominated for a 2019 Emmy.

The Television Academy made the announcement on Tuesday. Minding the Gap is nominated in the Outstanding Documentary or Notification Special category.

The documentary tells the story of three Rockford skateboarders through the lens of one of the skateboarders and director, Bing Liu. The emotional journey follows the three friends as they navigate growing into adults while facing poverty, domestic violence and other issues.

The film has received several accolades, including a win for Satellite Award for Best Documentary Film, a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Non-Fiction Film an Oscar nomination, and a Peabody award.

Liu, who is from Rockford, studied at Rock Valley College and went to the University of Illinois Chicago. Liu now lives in the Chicago area.

Minding the Gap is now available to stream on Hulu.
