Barry strengths to Category 1, makes landfall

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Barry strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall west of New Orleans earlier this morning.

Forecasters say the Mississippi River is expected to crest at 17.1 feet, not 19 feet as previously thought. For reference, the New Orleans levees are at least 20 feet tall.

The storm has brought maximum sustained winds of 75-mph.
